Before the establishment of the IAAF and the introduction of an official World Record ratification system, sprint performances were measured and reported under a variety of national rules and timing practices. During the nineteenth century, the 100 yards (91.44m) was the premier sprint distance throughout Britain and the English-speaking world, while metric races gradually gained popularity across continental Europe. As athletics developed from local festivals and university meetings into organised international competition, the progression of the fastest sprint performances reflected improvements in track conditions, starting methods and timekeeping rather than a unified record system.

The earliest recognised world-best performances over 100 yards were almost exclusively achieved by British athletes during the 1860s and 1870s, when Oxford and Cambridge meetings, amateur championships and regional athletics festivals formed the centre of competitive sprinting. Hand timing, inconsistent starting procedures and the absence of standardised track specifications meant that many performances remained open to historical interpretation, with several marks later reassessed by athletics historians. Nevertheless, the event established itself as the benchmark sprint discipline of the era, and by the late nineteenth century leading athletes had reduced the best performances from 10.0 seconds to 9⅘ and eventually 9⅗ seconds.

During the same period, the metric 100 metres gradually emerged as the international standard. The event featured at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and rapidly replaced the 100 yards in major international competitions, particularly across continental Europe. Early metric world-best performances were achieved by athletes from Great Britain, Belgium, Sweden, Germany and the United States, illustrating the sport’s expanding international reach. Improvements from 10.8 seconds in the early 1890s to 10.5 by 1911 reflected both the increasing quality of competition and the growing acceptance of metric distances in international athletics.

The years immediately preceding the foundation of the IAAF marked the transition from national record keeping to an internationally recognised system. American sprinter Charley Paddock became the dominant figure of the early 1920s after the introduction of official ratification, but the foundations had already been established by earlier pioneers including Knut Lindberg, Emil Ketterer, Richard Rau and Erwin Kern, whose performances represented the final unofficial milestones of the pre-IAAF era. When the IAAF began recognising official World Records in 1912, the men’s 100 metres inherited a mature competitive tradition that had evolved directly from nearly half a century of 100 yards and metric sprint development.
