Paris 1924 Olympic Games

The Paris 1924 Olympic Games produced some of the defining moments of early Olympic athletics and reinforced the growing international stature of track and field. Finland once again dominated distance running through the legendary “Flying Finns”, led by Paavo Nurmi, who achieved one of the greatest feats in Olympic history by winning the 1500m and 5000m titles within less than an hour on the same day, in addition to claiming victory in the individual cross-country event. Ville Ritola added further Finnish success by capturing gold in the 10,000m and 3000m steeplechase.

The Games also delivered iconic sprint performances from Great Britain’s Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, winners of the 100m and 400m respectively. Liddell famously chose not to compete in the 100m because its heats were scheduled on a Sunday. The United States led the athletics medal standings with 12 gold medals, while Finland followed with 10, highlighting one of the defining competitive rivalries of the decade.

Paris 1924 also marked important milestones in athletics history. DeHart Hubbard became the first African-American athlete to win an individual Olympic athletics gold medal with victory in the long jump, while Harold Osborn achieved a remarkable double by winning both the high jump and decathlon, setting a World Record in the latter. The Games showcased rising standards across multiple disciplines and further established athletics as the centerpiece of the modern Olympic movement.
