Athens 1906 intercalated Games

The Athens 1906 Intercalated Games (Mesolympiada / Mesolympics) (were originally intended to form part of a separate series of Olympic competitions to be staged in Athens between the official Olympiads. While the concept was eventually abandoned, the Athens Games proved highly successful and helped re-establish public interest in international athletics competition during the formative years of the Olympic movement.

American legend Ray Ewry continued his dominance in the standing jumps, successfully defending his Olympic titles and further cementing his status as one of the greatest athletes of the early Olympic era. Paul Pilgrim achieved a rare middle-distance double by winning both the 400m and 800m titles, while Canadian runner Billy Sherring claimed victory in the marathon after preparing in Greece for several months to adapt to the local conditions.

The Games also featured several symbolic and historic moments. Finland made its Olympic athletics debut with Verner Järvinen winning the Greek-style discus throw, while Ireland’s Peter O’Connor famously protested British representation rules by climbing the flagpole and raising the Irish flag after winning the triple jump title. Despite their unique status in Olympic history, the 1906 Games are widely regarded by historians as a major turning point in the stabilisation and international development of the modern Olympic Games.
