The women’s hammer throw is by far the newest of the major throwing events, and its record history reflects that late institutional acceptance. Although isolated marks had been recorded much earlier, the event remained largely outside the international women’s programme for most of the twentieth century and only began to develop seriously in the 1980s and early 1990s. World records were officially recognised by the IAAF from 1 January 1995, by which point a substantial pre-ratification progression had already emerged, driven mainly by throwers from the Soviet sphere, the United States and, increasingly, East Asia.

Because of that compressed timeline, the women’s hammer differs sharply from the shot put and discus. There is no long pre-federation era, no FSFI record structure and no gradual standardisation across several decades. Instead, the event moved very quickly from experimental and nationally contested marks to full international recognition. The early record progression therefore captures the transition from a developing specialist event into a fully established championship discipline, with the mid-1990s marking the real beginning of its official world-record era.
