Amsterdam 1928 became a landmark edition for athletics with the historic inclusion of women’s track and field events. Women competed in the 100 metres, 800 metres, high jump, discus throw and 4×100 metres relay, opening a new chapter in Olympic athletics history. American sprinter Betty Robinson won the inaugural women’s Olympic 100m title at just 16 years old, while Germany’s Lina Radke claimed victory in the first women’s Olympic 800m in a world record performance.

The Games also featured outstanding performances from established stars. Finland’s Paavo Nurmi secured the final Olympic gold medal of his legendary career by winning the 10,000 metres, while fellow Finn Ville Ritola triumphed in the 5,000 metres. Canada’s Percy Williams completed a sprint double by winning both the 100m and 200m titles, and five world records were broken during the athletics competition. Amsterdam 1928 ultimately became one of the most transformative Olympic athletics editions, combining elite performances with historic progress for women in sport.
