Rudisha won the IAAF World Athlete of the Year award in 2010 and three consecutive Track & Field News Athlete of the Year awards.
Unlike most middle-distance events, the historical progression of the men’s 800 metres developed through a combination of different distances and track layouts. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the 880 yards (804.67m) was the standard half-mile race throughout Britain and much of the English-speaking world, while the metric 800 metres gradually became established in continental Europe and international athletics. At the same time, races were contested both on straight tracks and around the bends of oval tracks, reflecting the diverse facilities used before the modern stadium became universal.
Before the establishment of the IAAF and the introduction of an official World Record ratification system, performances over 800 metres and 880 yards were widely regarded as comparable because the difference between the two distances was less than five metres. However, records achieved on straight tracks and curved tracks represented fundamentally different racing conditions. Straight courses eliminated the technical demands of negotiating bends and often produced faster performances, whereas curved races required athletes to maintain pace and rhythm through one or more turns, making direct comparisons between the two formats difficult.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, straight-track races remained common in Britain and parts of Europe, where long cinder straights were available for middle-distance competition. Meanwhile, curved races became increasingly widespread in North America and gradually spread to international championships as standardised oval stadiums replaced older track layouts. As a result, the world-best performances over the half-mile evolved simultaneously across different distances and different track configurations.
Because both distances and both track layouts remained in regular use for many decades, the IAAF initially accepted performances over 800 metres and 880 yards, whether achieved on straight or curved tracks, within the official World Record progression. As international athletics gradually standardised around the metric 400-metre oval, the 800 metres became the universal championship event, while straight-track races and performances over 880 yards disappeared from elite competition. The modern World Record progression therefore represents the culmination of a long transition from the historic half-mile tradition to the standardised 800 metres contested today.
