Women World Record Progression

The women’s 3000 metres steeplechase is one of the newest additions to the global championship programme, and its record history is therefore much shorter than that of the traditional distance events. Although isolated best performances over the barriers and water jump had appeared earlier, the event only began to gain real international structure in the late 1990s, when it was gradually adopted into major meetings and championships and moved toward formal record recognition.

World Athletics officially recognised the women’s 3000m steeplechase for world record purposes from 1 January 2000, with Yelena Motylova’s 9:48.88 from 1999 retrospectively becoming the first official world record. Within less than a decade, the record had already been driven below the nine-minute barrier by Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, whose 8:58.81 at the 2008 Olympic Games marked a decisive milestone in the event’s history.

In the years that followed, the women’s steeplechase evolved from a relatively new discipline into one of the strongest global events in distance running, shaped above all by the emergence of East African athletes and the continuous refinement of pace, hurdling efficiency and water-jump technique.
