Women World Record Progression

The women’s triple jump followed a very different path from the other jumps, remaining for decades outside the official world-record structure despite being contested intermittently from the late nineteenth century onward. Its early history is therefore less a conventional record progression than a scattered sequence of best-known performances, drawn from school, collegiate and later domestic competitions in countries such as the United States, Japan, the Soviet Union and China. Because the event was not officially recognised for record purposes until 1990, the pre-ratification progression is necessarily uneven and blends marks from very different competitive contexts.

That long unofficial phase is nevertheless important because it shows that the event had a real competitive life well before formal recognition arrived. Kinue Hitomi was among the early notable names in the 1920s, while from the 1980s onward the standard rose rapidly through athletes such as Terri Turner, Esmeralda Garcia, Galina Chistyakova and Li Huirong. By the time the IAAF finally accepted the women’s triple jump as an official world-record event from 1 January 1990, the discipline was already mature enough to move almost immediately into the 14.50-metre range and beyond. As a result, its historical progression is unusually compressed: a long unofficial prehistory followed by a short but intense early period of ratified global records.
